Glossary: AB

Accumulator

An accumulator tank reduces or eliminates the pulsations present within a liquid that is being pressure-fed by a pump. Several different types are available, including a piston-type accumulator and a tank-only type, in which the tank is enclosed within a rubber bag.

Synonym: Surge Tank

Air Blow

The process of releasing compressed air from a small nozzle, either to remove dust or debris from the object to be coated, or to cool the object prior to the actual coating operation.

Air Consumption

The quantity of air, measured as if converted to atmospheric pressure, which is utilized during the operation of spray guns and air-driven plunger pumps.

Unit: L / min.

Air Transformer

A device that incorporates a small air filter and a small air regulator, providing the functionality of both units.

Synonym: Air filtering pressure regulator

Angle of Repose

The critical angle, measured with respect to the horizontal, at which powder coatings and sludge formations will slide off the surface of a hopper, rather than adhering.

Anti-Back

A safety device that is used in trolley conveyors to prevent the conveyor chain from backing up, in the event that the conveyor chain is broken.

Anti-Runaway

A safety device that is used in trolley conveyors to prevent the conveyor chain from continuing to move forward, in the event that the conveyor chain is broken.

Asymmetric Membrane

A membrane that is composed of a compact layer and a porous support layer, both of which are made out of the same substance.

Atomizer

cf. Spray Unit

Atomizing

A technical term used in the air spray gun field, the atomizing (spraying) air pressure is the air pressure measured at the gun entrance when all conditions for coating have been properly satisfied. The atomizing air pressure can be measured by installing a pressure gauge at the air entrance of the gun, oriented at right angles to the air flow.

Unit: kPa, MPa

Atomizing Head

In a general sense, the atomizing mechanism of any type of coating equipment is referred to as an atomizing head. However, more specifically, an atomizing head refers to a rotary-type atomizing unit used for electrostatic coating equipment. Typical atomizing heads include the bell-shaped (cup) type and the disc-shaped type.

Synonyms: Spray Head, Atomizer

Automatic Coating Equipment

The term automatic coating equipment can be defined as:

(1) automatic coating equipment (the standard "gun" unit) versus handheld coating applicators

(2) automatic coating equipment that incorporates reciprocating or rotary spray equipment, curtain flow coaters and roll coaters.

However, automatic electrostatic coating equipment is generally referred to simply as "automatic coating equipment".

Automatic Coating Equipment

A collection of spray coating equipment employing multiple reciprocators and robots in a single coating line process operation.

Automatic Coating System

A system in which several types of automatic coating equipment (or systems) are associated with each other, in order to perform more complex coating operations. Automatic coating systems always include process control equipment.

Automatic Transfer Unit

The equipment used to automatically unload products from one conveyor and load them onto another conveyor.

Average Particle Size

The spray particle size must be measured in order to inspect the atomization conditions of the paint used for the coating equipment. The average particle size is one of the methods used to represent particle diameter and is usually expressed using the Sauter mean particle diameter.

<Sauter mean particle diameter> = ∑ D3 / ∑ D2

where D = average particle diameter.

Batch-type Drying Oven

A drying oven that is used to control and maintain the appropriate drying temperature inside of a box-shaped insulating container that has double doors.

Blooming

During the electrostatic coating process, the phenomenon in which fluorescent paint, such as metallic paint, tends to adhere in a stripe-like pattern, radiating out from a central point and taking on the appearance of a blooming flower.

Breakthrough Rate

In exhaust gas treatment equipment, the percentage of solvent that is released to the air, out of the entire quantity of solvent that has already been absorbed, such that the activated carbon has no further ability to absorb solvent. Unit: %

Synonym: Equilibrium Adsorption

Unit (g/g) (activated carbon)
