Glossary: S

Salt Passage

The concentration of salts in a membrane-filtered solution, versus their concentration in the original solution. Salt passage is most commonly expressed as a percentage.

Salt Rejection

The percentage of salt extracted from a solution through the use of a reverse osmotic membrane. (Unit: %)

Sanding

The process of removing dirt from, scuffing or abrading a surface, in preparation for painting, through the use of sandpaper or a mechanical sander.

Scale

A layer that has precipitated on the surface of a film. This layer is created due to the increasing concentration of a low-solubility substance present in supplied water, on the film's surface, which exceeds the solubility level due to the concentration or concentration polarization of the film.

Seismoscope

A seismoscope is used to automatically stop burner combustion in the event that an earthquake of magnitude 5 or greater occurs.

Semi-permeable Membrane

A selectively permeable membrane that permits only the solvent (or water) to pass through, while restricting the passage of solute.

Skin Layer

A thin, fine layer that is present on the surface of asymmetric membranes and bipolar membranes.

Space Velocity

In the catalytic oxidizer,

<Space velocity of the catalyst (SV)> = <Quantity of treated gas (m3/h)> / <Quantity of catalyst (m3)>

Unit: L / h

Split Pattern

A spray pattern that combines thick edges with a thinner central area. In general, coarse paint particles are used for the edges and finer particles are used in the central area.

Spray Unit

The term coating equipment includes devices such as the spray unit, sprayer, atomizer, coating applicator, and is generally defined as:

(1) the atomizer head alone (generally referred to as a "gun")

(2) a system consisting of a pump, a regulator and an atomizer head

However, coating equipment does not include automatic coating equipment and the associated control devices (except for the high voltage generators used for electrostatic coating). Furthermore, coating equipment can also be defined as a system consisting of a gun, a tank, paint supply equipment, a high voltage generator and a controller.

Synonyms: Sprayer, Atomizer, Coating Applicator

Sprayer

cf. Spray Unit

Spraying Distance

The distance between the tip of the coating equipment and the surface of the object to be coated. Unit: mm

Synonym: Coating Distance

Storage Line

A line that is used to ensure that products being transported via conveyor remain in the same position.

Synonyms: Dump Line, Buffer Line

Superficial Velocity

The wind velocity within the packed tower of the exhaust gas treatment system.

<The actual quantity of air passing through the tower (m3/sec)> / <Cross sectional area of the tower (m2)>

Unit: m/sec.

Supplying Apparatus for Coating

These terms refer to any system that incorporates the following equipment: coating equipment, paint supply equipment (such as pumps, pressure feed tanks and regulators) and air supply equipment (such as compressors, air dryers, air regulators and air transformers).

Synonym: Coating Applicator

Synchronized Operation

For both single and multiple conveyor lines, synchronized operation is the action of running multiple drive sources in order to power the conveyor lines at the same speed or with the same cycle. In particular, the method in which multiple drive sources are utilized to power a single line, is referred to as multi-operation.

Related Term: Operating in Synchronization
